245th Anniversary of the Battle of Eutaw Springs…
Can you imagine having conversations with someone from 245 years ago? Before I started exploring my mediumship abilities I would’ve never thought it possible. Now it is becoming a regular part of my practice, and a gift of connection, experience, reverence and learning that I am eternally grateful for.
I live near the location of the Battle of Eutaw Springs, which was a hot and bloody South Carolina backcountry battle in 1781 between the American and British forces during the American Revolutionary War. After connecting with several soldiers, including Jean Baptiste “Jonas” Chaison and Captain Thomas Edmunds of Virginia, my understanding of how we can connect and work with each other throughout space and time has been transformed.
I try to stop by the battlefield a few times a year and made a point to on September 8, the anniversary of the battle this year. I am closely following the American Battlefield Trust and South Carolina Battlefield Trust’s efforts to revitalize the space. Even in just a short year many improvements have been made to expand and and improve the representation of the history that happened on the grounds.
Recently lots of efforts have been made to stabilize and secure this Witness Tree that was an estimated 50 years old at the time of the battle, which would make it about 300 years old today. When I first moved to the area there was a modern home and outbuilding developed on this part of the land. It’s beautiful to see this grand oak spread her branches unobstructed now.
What unexpectedly took my breath away this visit were the new state flags that have been put in place. Most of the soldiers I have connected with from this battle have been from Virginia or South Carolina. Seeing the Virginia flag blowing in the sunshine and knowing those men were finally represented here made me quite emotional, which I did not anticipate.
I then cautiously crossed the highway to the main part of the park and was greeted with a gorgeous blue dragonfly at the gate. It felt like a friendly welcome.
I spent a short time walking around, looking at the expansions and observing how different the landscape looked, despite not changing really at all. The careful pruning revealed more of the physical layout of a homestead site that was there. The different species of trees have become much easier to discern, and it felt like seeing the space I’d been to many times before with fresh eyes.
I brought a small American flag and placed it near the memorial stone. There was only one other person there, a fisherman taking advantage of what used to be the Eutaw Creek and springs that ran through the property. It is now a cove of Lake Marion after developments and man-made flooding in the 1940s. The jury is still out on whether or not it is a good fishing spot though, according to him he hadn’t caught anything yet that day.
I stood in silence for a while longer, gave my thanks and started to walk towards the gate. Sure enough, the small blue dragonfly flew up once again to thank me for my visit and say goodbye.
I can’t explain exactly why or how I have such a beautiful connection to the land that I call home, even beyond the battle to it’s ancient indigenous history. I think being a witness to pain, loss, trauma, and love at any point in time helps heal us in all directions. It may be heavy at times, but how fortunate am I to be blessed with this responsibility, this capability of experiencing such Divine love? It’s one that I will never stop learning and growing from no matter where my life may take me.
