Why We Sleep

Chronicles of a Dreamworker Newsletter, v.34

Hello Intuitive Friends!

WELP. After last week’s break from lucid dreams this week they are back and are probably the most vivid they’ve ever been. I remembered pausing during one lucid dream this week and noted that what I was feeling was the closest to waking consciousness I’d ever had. The breeze was blowing, I could see the small park around me and was amazed and almost frightened at how real it felt. It was incredible. Could this be a sign of progression? It’s exciting to think about.

I’ve also been meeting up with other dreamworkers in lucid dreams this week. One night consisted of a large gathering of us, almost like a conference. The second instance I ran into a friend I had met in a dream before. We had agreed to try to meet in the waking consciousness before as well, and it seemed like this conversation was again confirming that we were trying to do so. We exchanged names this time, so Diane, if you are out there, please do reach out!

In times of uncertainty there have also been many moments of kindness. I was having trouble “getting back” or waking up from another lucid dream. A lovely person named Ainsley helped me get where I needed to be. Thank you again Ainsley, I promised I wouldn’t forget you!

As you can see it’s been a busy week in the dream world! Here’s a bit more of what’s been happening on this side of our eyes.

Why We Sleep: A Review

Why do we sleep and dream? These questions have fueled the scientific explorations of Matthew Walker, PhD. In his book Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams Walker aims to share what he’s learned with a powerful message for readers: good sleep isn’t just important, it’s vital.

The book takes more a scientific research approach to it’s narrative, providing plenty of academic and scientific studies and data to support the different topics discussed throughout the book. From the history of sleep to it’s societal impacts no pillow is left unturned in the discussion. While it can be a heavy read at times, overall the book does a great job of concisely explaining individual concepts while tying them together with our physical processes, such as the brain’s anatomical function in sleep and how it controls our waking and sleeping times.

For those interested in dream topics specifically section three consists of several chapters that cover dreaming. There is a great analysis of how REM sleep controls our dreaming functions. However there is not as robust of coverage on lucid dreaming, although it is discussed in topics of dream control and creativity.

The book has enlightening information on the importance of a balanced sleep routine, and how a lack of sleep can literally take years off of your life. It shows how important sleep is throughout different stages of our lives from infancy to elder years. It also offers an honest examination of our society’s unhealthy approach to sleep and its negative impacts, like fatal car crashes or mistakes made in medical procedures. It offers suggestions to easily implement some of these healthier habits, and has certainly made me reevaluate my sleep routine and make improvements.

In conclusion, this is a must-have book for anyone interested in exploring more of the scientific processes behind sleep and why it is so important to our physical, mental, and emotional health. It’s a fantastic introductory book for beginners and will definitely be an often-referenced addition to my own collection.

Sodalite

They say crystals can have a way of “calling” to you, reaching out energetically to help you. I recently had this experience with a new favorite stone of mine, Sodalite.

Sodalite is a beautiful, blue stone often with light white or grey striations. It is considered the stone of poets and thinkers. It helps aid communication, provide clarity and self-trust. It can help boost intuition, dispel anxiety and fear.

I have a small bag of tumbled stones I bought years ago while on outing with our kids at the children’s museum. They had one of those big bowls you can scoop tumbled stones out of into little bags, so the kids and I each got one. This was before I really started working with crystals, but I did know that stones could help energetically with it’s own unique properties. I just thought it was a fun way to remember the day as I loved to collects rocks and minerals as a kid myself.

Throughout the years what I thought was an assuming little bag of “fun” stones have turned into treasured spiritual companions in my practice. I still have a few left to identify, and while looking for another stone the other day the sodalite dumped into my hand. The stone felt different this time, like it was time to start getting to know this stone and working with it. I looked it up and was immediately shown why it was calling to me.

I’ve felt somewhat stuck on some of spiritual paths as of late. While it is incredible to have the time and resources to explore and develop my own practice, I still feel a deep need to connect and share what I learn with others. My writing has always been the way I could rely on my brain to put those creative thoughts out into the world.

I realized that I didn’t want numbers, followers, or stats – What I really want is for people to truly connect with my writing.  I want every person to walk away feeling something new or special about themselves. I want readership that will resonate and help build a solid foundation for intuitive community connection and growth.

I realize as a writer that this starts with me. This starts with me genuinely sharing myself and my relationship with spirit, and authentically presenting the experiences and lessons I learn. I don’t want to write about what’s popular, I want to write about things that mean something to me, and to others who can truly see themselves within this great big beautiful Universe too.

Working sodalite also boosts my self-confidence and trust in my intuitive abilities. A lot of intuitive folks still contend with the age-old insecurity of “Why me?” Throughout their journey. Sodalite can help calm those anxieties, and help you remember that Spirit placed you here with these gifts for a reason, and you are exactly who you think you are.

If you’re looking for support to help you on your path with clarity and confidence, grab yourself a piece of sodalite. For help with dreamwork place sodalite by your bedside or near your dream journal to assist with dream recall and clarity.
