Joy…

“… ‘Tis the season to be jolly and joyous
With a burst of pleasure, we feel it all right
It’s the season when the saints can employ us
To spread the news about peace and to keep love alive!”

-The Muppet Christmas Carol, One More Sleep ‘Til Christmas

I’ve said before and still firmly believe that if everyone had more of The Muppets in their lives we’d all be better for it! One of my all-time favorite Christmas movies is The Muppet Christmas Carol. It does a wonderful job of bringing to life Charles Dickens’ classic story with humor and depth while emphasizing the importance of the message – to be the joy of hope the world so desperately needs this season.

Of course, just because one wants to be joyful doesn’t make it automatically happen, but to some degree we do have to choose joy. Sometimes choosing joy can be scary. Especially during times like these with so much hostility and the global accessibility of the internet. Pain, sadness, despair, suffering and terrible comments are all at our fingertips now, 24/7. We don’t have a choice to look away anymore, we have to observe and be witness, through subjugated systemic force or personal responsibility. We can’t deny there is real darkness and evil happening in this world every day.

For that reason and so many others, we must be brave and choose joy. If you are a teacher, a performer, a creator, someone who shares anything of themselves in order to bring someone else a sense of joy, comfort, and happiness, I commend you for your bravery. The better you are at leading the harder it gets as well. The more people you reach the more judgement is brought your way. It’s impossible not to get hurt.

Sticking your chin up and going back on the stage, back into your classroom, or back into your studio, it shows real courage. It shows heart. You undeniably have it. Thank you for bringing it to the world and so generously sharing it. Please, never, ever give it up.

Choosing to bring others joy in such a tumultuous time is no easy task. We can’t see the weight of the words that try to tear you down, only their hollowness on our screens in passing. What we can see instead, and what truly moves our spirits are the many ways you shine.

Please choose joy this season for yourself, for others, for all of us. As Tiny Tim sings, it’s our job to help the saints and angels spread the news of peace and hope in keeping love alive. It’s up to all of us. We got this.

Happy Holidays my dear friends.
