A Grain of Sand

Standing on the edge

Of now and then.

Was it sunny like today?

Will there be more days like that ahead?

Today people play, swim, and love

Not knowing the pain that lies beneath their feet.

Only focused on the tides, always changing,

Unaware of the memories etched in the grains of sand,

Observers of humanity’s trials, darkest moments and deepest joys for thousands of years.

But they too will eventually wash away.

Many moments

Smiles with friends

In the waves with children

Late night walks and moonlit dips

Hands held as fireworks explode

A deep breath and a calming moment of knowing

A lifetime is a short time

It’s only a grain of sand.
