Katie Thompson is an independent designer, maker, and writer based outside of Charleston, SC. She graduated from the College of Charleston in 2009 with a B.A. in Communications with a focus on Communication Theory and a minor in History.

Katie’s college years began with a rocky start. After herniating a disc in her back resulting in a 60% compression on her spinal cord her freshman year, she had corrective surgery and contracted bacterial meningitis shortly afterwards. After a near-death struggle with several surgeries, long hospital stays and rehabilitation, Katie now shares her story as a mom and creative professional with multiple chronic illnesses and disabilities.

Immediately after college graduation, she began freelancing as a writer, marketing and public relations manager and creative design consultant. After meeting at the farmers market where has was a vendor, Katie partnered with furniture maker Joseph Thompson and they were married in 2011. They have two children together, Hamilton and Madeline. Their business Joseph Thompson Woodworks focuses on building custom handcrafted furniture using high quality materials and traditional woodworking building methods.

Their work has been featured in publications such as Furniture & Cabinetmaking and Charleston Magazine. Their work has been exhibited at the Dalton Gallery at Agnes Scott College, the American Craft Council, Dwelling, The Target Gallery at the Torpedo Factory Arts Center, the One of a Kind Show, the South Carolina State Museum and McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina.

Katie also has a line of modern handmade jewelry and accessories, Black Swamp. The designs are made using recycled offcuts and scraps from the furniture business. The line is named after the swampy surroundings of Thompson’s home and workshop in Eutawville, SC.

Katie designed and handcrafted the Cistern Oak collection for the College of Charleston Alumni Association, with proceeds going towards alumni programs and student scholarships.

She has continued to pursue writing passions as a freelance writer and is currently writing her latest project, Women of Woodworking. Her children’s book, “Little Beaver Builds a Bed,” was published in 2016 in partnership with illustrator Kristen Solecki.

She also has an active social media following which has brought her opportunities such as video contributions to the TODAY Show, and Our Neck of the Woods, Katie’s personal vlog project on YouTube.
